Exchange 2003 Clustering Consulting Services

Clustering neatly illustrates how a new Microsoft technology evolves.  While the general concept of clustering servers has been around for a long time.  In the 1990's Microsoft started developing clustering for NT servers.  Unfortunately, early  implementations were weak, even flaky.  By Windows 2000 clustering was workable if not scaleable.  With Windows Server 2003 and Exchange 2003 all the pieces are in place to make clustering a feasible solution.

Planning your Cluster

Before designing your cluster, analyze how your messaging system is used and design your cluster in a way that will accommodate peak usage periods. For example, the entire configuration of the server cluster that is discussed in this document (hardware, software and cluster configuration) is designed to meet the requirements for peak usage. At Microsoft, Monday mornings are the busiest time for e-mail, as employees attempt to catch up from the weekend. Every server cluster configuration should accommodate the peak usage periods.

Exchange 2003 Clustering Summary

The Operation and Technology Group (OTG) at Microsoft uses Windows Server 2003 server cluster technology in a typical way, with a few changes that maximize the performance of the hardware. Because OTG selected these configurations (both server and storage) for deployment at Microsoft, they might not meet your specific deployment needs. IT professionals should use the Microsoft implementation as an example when configuring their own Exchange server cluster. As always, careful analysis, planning, testing, and piloting should precede any Exchange deployment and cluster design decisions. Ensure that you apply all applicable best practices and recommendations when making your own design decisions. In addition, ensure that you have properly characterized your environment before server configuration choices are made and hardware is purchased. When properly used and implemented, server cluster technology can create more reliable and available messaging
